As time passes, and the bar required for good accessibility is raised, some places simply fail to meet the challenge. Goodison Park is one of those.

Getting into the ground is fairly easy, but once inside it becomes apparent just how poor this place is.

To get to the wheelchair accessible spaces, there’s a drop in the path which means that wheelchair users can find they lose control. I did. Once settled into position at the front of the stand, you find that eye height is just above pitch level. There isn’t much of a gap between the footplates and the advertising hoardings, and as this is also the way for disabled Everton fans to access their seats (and back for the toilets), this means constant interruptions. To make matters worse, the view for some was obstructed by stewards on the pitch.

There was no access to the concourse used by away fans, and I heard that a PA for one disabled supporter was directed to the home fans concourse and was verbally abused
.
The toilets? Well there were two of them, but they both had to cater for disabled fans from TWO stands. Even worse, my powered wheelchair couldn’t fit inside.

Everton may be getting a new stadium, but its clear that despite being in the Premier League since its inception, that they’ve spent very little on improving accessibility for disabled away fans.
